US to Japan premium economy prices

Pricing UA - EWR to HND - April/May 2025 -

Last week I saw prices at $2600 per person, but now they’re up to $3600 per person. Is this kind of price swing typical? Is $2600 about as low as it gets? Any advice aside from constantly checking the websites of both UA and ANA would be appreciated! Thank you!

Is that round trip? One-way fares are usually ridiculously expensive. I’ve seen premium economy round trip for under $2k before, but keep in mind that April is at the tail end of peak spring travel season in Japan, and overall airline prices have surged a lot in recent years.

When I check all of Tokyo flights, I’m seeing $2051 for connecting flights and $2700 for non-stop to NRT.

Seems decent for cherry blossom season!

Definitely aim for Haneda if you can. Narita is quite far from the city, while Haneda offers quick access to the city center.

@Kyrie
It takes about 72 minutes to reach Shinjuku Station. If that extra cost of $1600 is worth it to you, it might be worth it.

@Kyrie
Getting to Tokyo from NRT isn’t hard; immigration can be quicker since most flights land in HND. I could actually get to Tokyo station from NRT faster than clearing immigration at HND, unless you’re landing during peak times.

I usually book an economy fare and then have the option to upgrade each leg for about $299 when United offers it. I’ve successfully done this on three round trips in the past year.

Do all economy fares allow upgrades?

@Jordan
Round trips from any US destination generally start as non-changeable. However, they include baggage and seat choice. You can pay to upgrade if you go round trip with a non-stop flight out to Japan and a stopover on the return. Any trip starting with a one-stop, returning non-stop will likely be basic economy, where you’ll need to upgrade to have the same benefits, including upgrades.

Wow! We’re flying in a month and paid $1000 round trip from the eastern US with Delta Comfort +.

Prices can change by the hour, depending on the route, competition, and any spikes in demand.

Check out Zip Air for low-cost flights to Japan. They fly from limited cities, so it might be cheaper to find a flight to those cities in the US and then use Zip to get to Japan. Alternatively, consider piecing together your flights or using a site like Skyscanner. I found a flight from California to Japan for around $700 recently, so look for flights to California first. Avoid airline websites; sites like Expedia or Kayak usually yield better prices. Hope this helps!

@Luchivya
Thanks for the tip!

Would highly recommend flying Zip Air. They offer great deals to Japan and excellent service.
