Last week I saw prices at $2600 per person, but now they’re up to $3600 per person. Is this kind of price swing typical? Is $2600 about as low as it gets? Any advice aside from constantly checking the websites of both UA and ANA would be appreciated! Thank you!
Is that round trip? One-way fares are usually ridiculously expensive. I’ve seen premium economy round trip for under $2k before, but keep in mind that April is at the tail end of peak spring travel season in Japan, and overall airline prices have surged a lot in recent years.
@Kyrie
Getting to Tokyo from NRT isn’t hard; immigration can be quicker since most flights land in HND. I could actually get to Tokyo station from NRT faster than clearing immigration at HND, unless you’re landing during peak times.
I usually book an economy fare and then have the option to upgrade each leg for about $299 when United offers it. I’ve successfully done this on three round trips in the past year.

@Jordan
Round trips from any US destination generally start as non-changeable. However, they include baggage and seat choice. You can pay to upgrade if you go round trip with a non-stop flight out to Japan and a stopover on the return. Any trip starting with a one-stop, returning non-stop will likely be basic economy, where you’ll need to upgrade to have the same benefits, including upgrades.
Check out Zip Air for low-cost flights to Japan. They fly from limited cities, so it might be cheaper to find a flight to those cities in the US and then use Zip to get to Japan. Alternatively, consider piecing together your flights or using a site like Skyscanner. I found a flight from California to Japan for around $700 recently, so look for flights to California first. Avoid airline websites; sites like Expedia or Kayak usually yield better prices. Hope this helps!
