Travelling Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania this December. Any suggestions for the solo traveller?

Hello, I am travelling to the capital cities of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Any suggestions?

About myself - middle aged, solo traveller, not much of a hiker, looking for chill time.

“Not much of a hiker, looking for chill time” – you’re traveling to the right countries then!

These might be common suggestions, but they are some of my brightest memories:

  • Riga Central Market: it’s in a former zeppelin hangar, really cool, and the food is amazing!
  • The Republic of Uzupis in Vilnius: especially appealing if you’re into graffiti, street art, crafts, and hippie culture.

Tallinn is one of my favorites! Be sure to check out the Telliskivi area—it’s an old industrial area transformed into shops, galleries, etc. I’ve also done a few tours with this company and they’re top-notch:

Additionally, make sure to visit the National Museum of Estonia and the Museum of Occupation. Enjoy your travels! I loved all three countries, but Estonia was my favorite.

Yes, that’s it!

Be prepared for very short daylight hours and unpredictable weather. If you have the time, try to venture out of the capitals.

I recommend doing a free walking tour in each of the capitals. They are great for learning about the important sights and provide a nice way to chill. I did a similar trip, and it might be cold. Spend a bit more time in Riga and Tallinn, and less in Vilnius, but it really depends on your preferences. You might also consider visiting Helsinki.

Helsinki Zoo is a great place to visit, and there’s a bus from the zoo to the city center. Also, consider Lahemaa National Park in Estonia for a relaxing time.

Tallinn has nice spas—check out Kalev Spa and Elamus Spa. They usually offer cheaper prices in the morning. On weekdays, look for lunch special menus that are comparatively cheaper. Estonia is quite digital, so you can pay with a card almost everywhere.

Don’t miss the Telliskivi area in the evening, the Christmas market in the center, and Kompressor, which is famous for its variety of pancakes. However, I’d recommend avoiding Old Hansa due to its high prices, even though it has a great medieval theme.

I loved the Baltics. I suggest taking the bus between countries; they are comfortable, fast, and offer a nice view of the countryside.

Make sure to wear warm clothes!

If you’re into video games, I highly recommend the Lvl Up! museum in Tallinn. It’s super interesting and covers the history of video games in the Soviet Union.

Don’t forget to take a day trip to Helsinki while you’re in Tallinn!
