Tips for Getting a Free Upgrade on Flights

I’m traveling transatlantic on Monday with Virgin Atlantic and company policy is to book economy only. What are some good, realistic tips for securing a free upgrade?

The chance of getting an operational upgrade is about 0.0001%. It usually goes to those in Premium Economy or with status. Bottom line: very unlikely to get a free upgrade unless you pay for it via the app or at check-in.

I still can’t forgive myself for rejecting a free business class upgrade on Emirates years ago just so my wife and I could sit together. First-time flyers with no status.

You’re absolutely right!

Airlines prioritize upgrades for loyal customers. Unless you have a high status in their frequent flyer program, you’re unlikely to get upgraded for free. Some airlines have bidding systems for upgrades available to everyone.

Why not just buy an upgrade with the cash you might find from someone on the street?

The easiest way to secure an upgrade is to simply purchase the seat you want.

Upgrades are extremely rare now. I did get one a couple of years ago by being the last to check in for a half-empty plane, which led to an upgrade to business class. It was a one-off experience.

In today’s world, good luck getting a free upgrade.

Try proclaiming loudly, ‘Do you know who I am? I just can’t deal with economy class!’.

Comment of the day!

The good old days of charm and sweet-talking your way to an upgrade are gone. Airlines use complex algorithms to determine upgrades based on status and seat cost. In my experience with United, it requires high status or a full fare ticket to get any upgrade at all.

Your best chance for an upgrade (though still quite rare for international flights) is to have the highest possible status with that airline and spend a lot with them.

The garden variety wisdom that dressing nicely and charming gate agents might get you an upgrade is obsolete. Nowadays, it’s all managed by computers. Upgrades often only happen when economy is overbooked, and they go to those with higher loyalty program status.

It might help to know someone high up in the airline.

Do you frequently ask for things for free? Airlines rarely upgrade unless absolutely necessary. If you want an upgrade, pay for it. Simple as that.
