Taking a long flight from Asia to Europe for a short stay Any tips to handle jet lag

Trying to manage jet lag and tiredness during the trip

For such a brief trip, I’m guessing there’s a specific reason for your travel. Don’t stress about avoiding jet lag, just sleep whenever you can and do your best. Expect to feel a bit rough.

Stay awake for as long as you can after you land, even though it can be tough. Go to sleep at a regular time for that time zone. You’ll likely wake up adjusted to the new time and have more energy for your trip. (By the way, I work as a flight attendant.)

This might not work for younger folks who don’t wear watches, but my best jet lag tip is to set your watch to your destination’s time zone about a week before you go. This helps your mind adjust beforehand.

I usually do this for a 9-hour difference, but yours sounds bigger.

@Pierce
Starting this at the beginning of your flight can also help your mind get used to the new time.

Consider trying the Timeshifter app; they offer a free trial for one trip.

I found this app very useful

A combination of three drinks and Ambien could be effective

It really depends on your flight schedule.

My first flight departs at 2 AM local time and arrives in the UK at 6:30 AM, then the return flight leaves at 10 AM UK time and lands back in China at 6 AM.

@Nico
That sounds tough.

Sleep as much as you can on the flight. Power through your first day in the UK until around 9 PM. Then take a long sleep to help reset your body.

Stay hydrated with Pedialyte or liquid IVs; it can really make a difference.

@Zinnia
Definitely exercise once you arrive to help you sleep well.

Good advice. Make sure to do it!

A couple of cocktails can also help in the evening.

Absolutely exercise and seek sunlight as soon as you can.

Exactly. Avoid alcohol from earlier suggestions; it won’t help. If you’re not used to sleep aids, skip them this time. If you need something to keep you going on that first day, a little coffee or caffeinated tea is okay, just no later than 3 PM to ensure a good night’s sleep.

@Brett
Yes, alcohol is dehydrating and has sedative effects.

@Nico
Getting to Europe will be manageable. Coming back is another story. It will take a few days to get back to normal, so hopefully, you won’t have to go straight to work.

Consider wearing compression stockings. It helps, even if you’re not older.

If you can, fly in business or first class. You’re welcome :blush:

But that still might not help with the sleep issue during odd hours. How do you avoid oversleeping?
