My mother has told me to carry two bags with me, one duffel bag and one backpack even though I only got one small back pack on my booking. She said I would be able to carry it without problems. I’m travelling with a friend and they’ve told me that I’m going to be charged 70 pounds for bringing an extra bag. I’m really upset with my mother but will I actually be charged that money?
Yes you will. It’s a tossup whether staff will require you to fit your backpack in the personal item checker, so you could potentially let you get away with a subtly bigger bag, but there’s no way they’d let you take a carryon you didn’t pay for. Repack or pay for a carryon bag.
I’m guessing your mum hasn’t flown much in the past decade, or always has an automatic free carryon. I remember flying back in like 2016 with a massive tote back as my personal item, a wheeled 24" suitcase as a carryon, my purse, plus an instrument for free with no extra charges (obv not Ryanair). Long gone are those days!
@Rai
Surprisingly I just got off the flight and they didn’t even check my luggage at all. Strange.

Lol that’s amazing. It’s really a matter of luck tbh. Last Ryanair flight I was on, some girl’s carryon was slightly too big and she was shrieking and crying as she unpacked everything, tried to break the wheels off her suitcase to fit, yelled at the employees begging for mercy, and tried to stuff everything in a tote bag. It was certainly a sight to behold
@Rai
Tbf it really depends on the gate staff. I’ve been lucky & not been checked when having two bags as hand luggage when only meant to have one on a fully booked flight.
Then I’ve had my small bag checked to see if it would fit in the sizer (it did) on a half empty flight.
Also on a flight back from Warsaw a girl in front of me had to check in her cabin bag because it didn’t fit in the sizer & she was raging at the crew & I was then panicking because I’d bought merch at the eras tour & it wouldn’t fit in my backpack so I had a small tote bag as well but they were preoccupied then and I managed to get past them
It’s really a lottery with them.
@Dane
I think if someone freaks out they’re gonna get no leeway. If you’re chill and polite and understanding you might get some wiggle room but don’t expect it and don’t feel entitled to it.
This is my rule for so many things in life.
@Kai
Oh definitely!
I remember a guy freaking out on a flight back from Prague to Dublin and his bags were clearly oversized even for cabin baggage they looked like massive trunks and looked more like they should have been checked in from the start.
He was so nasty and entitled to the young guy who was dealing with him and he tried to give him his ticket for the bags so he could pick them up afterwards from oversized baggage claim and he threw it back at him & said he would hold him personally responsible if they got lost.
So being nice and polite and treating people with respect will get you a lot more places than being an entitled asshole.
I never expect anything like that and I was fully expecting to pay in Warsaw but I got lucky & was grateful for it.
You will definitely be charged if you show up with two bags. Your mother either hates you and is intentionally setting you up for failure or hasn’t traveled in quite some time and isn’t aware of how Ryanair currently operates.
Yes. Check with the airline? It should be described pretty clearly on your tickets.
Your fare probably only includes one personal item (your backpack, assuming it can fit under the seat). The duffel will be a carry-on hand bag and likely not included in your ticket and you will be charged for it.
With Ryanair, yes.
If your personal item is bigger than the size measurements there is a high chance you will get charged for that one as well.
Yea, Ryanair will charge you for anything they can and this they will. Normal airlines wouldn’t bat an eye on a personal item plus carry-on. Ryanair is the lowest of the low-costs and they are sorry they cannot charge for oxygen. So yeah, you’re paying.
Chances of getting noticed at check-in with a bag you haven’t paid for = extremely high.
Have you checked in yet? If not, great, go into the booking on the app or website and add the appropriate bag to the booking in advance.
If you have checked in then it’s probably worth trying anyway and reissue the boarding pass - I have no idea whether they will let you.
It depends. If it’s Ryanair staff at the boarding gate then yes you will get charged. If it’s airport staff at the boarding gate, you won’t have a problem.
Ryanair has strict baggage policies, allowing only one small bag for free. Bringing an additional duffel bag will likely incur a fee, often around £70. Check your booking details and Ryanair’s website for specifics to avoid unexpected charges.
That hasn’t been a thing for like 10 years. You can get away with a small purse and your backpack if you can fit the purse in your backpack to board. They usually don’t make you if it’s small enough but they can.
One time I saw a guy at a Frontier gate scrambling to get the wheels off of his carry-on since it wouldn’t fit into the size checker.
Caution: Ryanair baggage sizes are smaller than the other airlines so they will catch you on this as well. I fly EasyJet instead for this reason.
And yes I take one carry-on and one personal size backpack but always confirm the sizes as well (remember you can always wear a jacket or bulky shoes onto the plane)!
Used to be standard to get a carry-on and a personal item but those sweet days are long gone.

They still are on non-budget airlines.
Budget airlines are ala carte.
