Traveling through NYC in May and August. Looking for recommendations for reasonably priced and clean hotels for my stay.
I’ve always found good deals (on a relative basis) at the Crowne Plaza. And their rooms are bigger than most.

Is the Crowne Plaza in Times Square or Chelsea?

Times Square.

Yeah, Crowne Plaza is solid. Their rooms are definitely roomier than most NYC spots.
Whatever you’re looking at, be sure that they aren’t charging ‘destination fees.’ These are rip-off extra charges that are not included in the price with taxes and can be like $25+ per night. Sometimes you’ve got to read the fine print. Hyatt’s pretty upfront on which of their properties have the fees.
What is ‘reasonable’ to you?

$200 or less.

To be honest, I don’t think what you want exists. If you are willing to go up to $250, I’d say look at Hilton Garden Times Square South (more Hells Kitchen than Times Sq), Doubletree Hilton Times Sq West, Holiday Inn Manhattan 6th Ave.
Under $200, you’re looking at hostels, shared bathrooms, or Long Island City.
All hotel booking sites have a price filter. Start there.
Unfortunately, all I can say is good luck on that. NYC hotels are quite expensive. There have been quite a few discussions on this subject. The only way around it is to stay in New Jersey or Queens and take public transportation in.
