NYC hotels that won’t put me in debt

@Kiran
I stayed at this Fairfield a few months ago and it was perfect for a few days in Manhattan, if you don’t plan to spend much time in the room (just because they’re tiny). I’d recommend it!

Nobody here has a magic wand…NYC is expensive and there’s no way around it. Personally, I stay at the Hampton Inn Times Square south when I come into town; I find that it’s generally the best price-to-location ratio. Nothing luxurious, but it’s safe and free breakfast!

@Toryn
I don’t think free breakfast really matters when you are paying $160+ per night before taxes and fees…

No, it doesn’t, but $160 a night is almost unbeatable for NYC. Sorry if you have trouble with reading comprehension!

Eight million locals pay too much every day. You’re just gonna have to budget until you can afford it or go somewhere else.

I’m seeing some hotels in Brooklyn and Long Island City under $200 a night on Google Hotels for early-mid May.

Make sure your dates avoid Memorial Day Weekend and the second half of June. Schools start ending for the summer in mid-June, so families start traveling and drive the cost of hotels out of control.

Lots of the LIC hotels are also housing the homeless migrants. Keep that in mind when looking there. It makes for an awkward hotel experience.

Was it in the same hotel? Or just hotels nearby?

@Wyatt
Lots of the hotels in LIC are housing families of migrants. That is why they are filled to capacity. One just needs to pass by to notice.

@Kingsley
Thank you. Think I’m gonna have to play around with my dates.

What about July 4? It’s on my bucket list to go there for that holiday. One year.

Looking at Priceline now for this July 4th, surprisingly still around $180-$220 a night for a decent hotel in Manhattan.

If you can stay at a hostel, I recommend NY Moore Hostel. I stayed there for 6 days last week. It’s clean, close to the L train, and didn’t break the bank.
They’ve got a couple of rooms as well as dorm beds.

Tradeoff of paying less being in a borough, NJ, or even somewhere like Stamford, CT, and then spending the time and $ going back and forth every day.

At least the NYC subway runs 24/7 and costs $2.90. Staying in NJ, you’re at the mercy of the PATH and its 20-minute intervals on nights and weekends, and Westchester or CT requires you to catch the last train out of Grand Central at 1 am, or pay a fortune for a ride.

Maybe Jersey, but definitely not CT.

No specific recommendations, but I visit NYC a few times a year for work and combining high reward credit cards with mid-week stays helps keep costs a little lower. Also, you should pick a few options and then join their mailing list— they are almost always running 10-15% off deals.

Hostels instead?

I spent a few nights in Nap York this month. It’s nothing special, but not bad either. Very clean and quiet.

100ish dollars a night for a locker and a bunk with a curtain. Quiet hours are like 9-9.

Only makes sense if you are traveling alone though.

@Onyx
$100 for a bunk is actually a joke.
