Looking for Tips on Splitting Accommodation Costs as Snowbirds

My husband and I are getting ready for retirement. We’re checking out places like Merida in Mexico, the Azuero Peninsula in Panama, and Algarve in Portugal to escape the cold Canadian winters.

Our biggest expense will be renting a place to stay.

What is the best way to find reliable travel partners to share an Airbnb?

Airbnb might not always be the best option for pricing.

It’s a good platform, but if you look for local agencies and are willing to deal with them directly, you might find prices lower than what the global app lists.
This could help you avoid the need for roommates.

How do you find these local agencies? What should I look for?

Check online and ask for recommendations from people in FB and Reddit groups who have rented in those areas.

Are you looking for another couple to share a place with? Why not consider a smaller place a bit further from the beach? I’m honestly curious since I’ll be retiring in a few years and want to spend winters away too.

Imagine being close to retirement and still looking to live with roommates.

I agree, the original poster should look for a smaller place that fits their budget.

I would suggest going for a winter and meeting people while you’re there. Have fun!

I’d recommend avoiding Airbnb and trying out Vrbo or local booking sites instead.

I’ve had good experiences with Airbnb actually.

Yeah, but by using Airbnb, you are supporting the Pumpkin Overlord. The owner of Vrbo doesn’t have that issue.

You could choose the Airbnb option where you actually stay with the host! This is how it began, and you’ll gain local knowledge. If you want to extend your stay, you’ll already have insights into what you’re getting into.

Often, it’s actually cheaper to rent year-round rather than short-term during the peak season.

Especially since Merida is unlivable in summer but nice in winter; it doesn’t make financial sense to rent there just for a short stay.
