My husband is supposed to fly out of Des Moines (DSM), but he’s coming up with the most unusual excuses to avoid flying. It occurred to me that it might be because he doesn’t have his ‘Seeing Eye Wife’ with him, and he’s not used to that. Is there a navigation option that can give him turn-by-turn directions through security to his gate? He’s not blind, but his vision is partial, and he has difficulty reading signs.

Check out the Aira app. It offers visual assistance for people with low vision, providing real-time navigation through airports with the help of live agents.

You can try the GoodMaps app. This free-to-the-end-user accessibility app uses your smartphone’s features to help you find your way around airports and transit stations. GoodMaps creates a map of building edges using LIDAR mapping, allowing for optical place finding with your phone’s camera. It does not rely on GPS but calculates your location within 3-5 feet using your phone’s accelerometer. GoodMaps also provides progressive taxi instructions visually and audibly, similar to an airport’s ground tower. Notably, it works indoors where GPS is less accurate.
