First and Middle Name Combined (Booked United Flying Lufthansa)

I’ll be flying Lufthansa in February - booked with United (have done this route before). Last trip I didn’t have this issue where it combines my first and middle name as one name. United stated it was fine and so did Lufthansa (as long as all the spelling is correct). I am still nervous about it and wondering when I check in and put down my name and passport info if it will still be combined or separated. Has anyone experienced this and/or had any issues with it when trying to board etc?

Stupid United has been doing this to me for years, including when the flight is operated by another carrier. Never had a problem but it bugs me every time.

Closest thing I’ve had to a ‘problem’ is when the gate agent did a double take on an exit row check. Since my (traditionally) male first name plus middle initial becomes a (traditionally) female first name.

But yeah it’s very common in airline ticketing systems and everyone on the other side of the gate knows this.

It bugs me too! Last trip it was fine when I got my boarding pass with Lufthansa but was messed up with Air Canada on my way back.

First and middle being combined is very standard, as long as they’re in the correct order it’s not a problem. Systems aren’t really set up to differentiate the middle from the first.

But I once had a customer service rep typo my middle name as the first part of my last name and that was a headache.

@Vale
I came here to say this.

@Vale
Yeah like say my name is Laurie Marie Smith it’s showing as Lauriemarie Smith all spelled correctly but it’s super frustrating and I’m just nervous something is going to go wrong :joy: but they both said no that happens but I’m not paying $$$ for them to not let me go :laughing:.

@Avery
Lauriemarie Smith is totally fine. They’re looking for the first name in the first part and the correct last name. I’ve never had an issue when it shows up like this, which is pretty much all the time.

The problem is when it’s Marielaurie Smith or Laurie Mariesmith.

@Vale
Ahhh yeah I could see that.

@Avery
It should even say Smith/Lauriemariemrs on your boarding pass (assuming you’re married). It doesn’t matter at all.

Next time you can even book your ticket without using your middle name; it will be fine.

@Val
I’m not sure it will show Mrs but would it matter if it didn’t? I know it’s not showing that as of now.

Every single flight.

Lots of international? That’s more or less what I’m worried about.

My first and middle name are often combined on my ticket and I’ve never had an issue. I fly about 20+ times a year.

I’m assuming internationally as well?

Yes, sorry I forgot to specify! And including a situation like yours where it’s a European airline but booked with an American airline.

I had this exact same scenario with my wife’s ticket last year from CLT > CPH. We got through fine and prior to the flight, I called both United and Lufthansa and had them make a note on the record.

Yeah I talked to them both and United did make a note in the reservation since I booked with them but flying with Lufthansa, but they also said it is completely common but I just am so apprehensive and wanna make sure that I’m not paying money to be denied ya know!

@Avery
Oh I spent the better part of two months anxiously waiting for something to happen at check in that never did.
