How are you,
So, I haven’t flown anywhere in over 15 years and was wondering – is it normal for airlines to keep changing flights? I booked a trip with American Airlines for Dec 14–17, and in the last two months, they’ve already changed our flights twice. Should I expect more changes as we get closer to December?
Here’s the deal: I booked flights in June for me and my 3 kids to visit my mom in Grand Rapids, MI. I thought I was being smart by booking early for the holiday season, but now it’s turning into a headache. My two oldest kids (20F and 18M) had their flights from Fayetteville, AR completely changed. Now, they’re arriving over 5 hours after me and my other daughter, which really messes with our plans.I get that flights change, especially into small airports like GR, but did I mess up by booking so far in advance? AA customer service said I can only make flight changes once after they alter things, so should I wait a bit longer before trying to fix this again? Or would it be better to just switch to Delta or United – are they any less likely to keep changing things?
Also, should I just give up trying to coordinate everyone flying into GR around the same time and instead have us fly into a bigger airport like Chicago O’Hare or Detroit? I really don’t want to do the 6-hour drive each way, though, because we want to spend as much time with Grandma as possible. She’s 88, can’t travel anymore, and this might be one of the last times we can all be together.
Sorry for the long post, but I’d love any advice from people who travel a lot, especially around the holidays or into small airports like Grand Rapids!*
Hoping to get assistance…
When demand changes, airlines modify their flight itineraries accordingly. A flight may be rescheduled or combined with another flight if it isn’t full up as planned
Weather, limits on air traffic control, and other unanticipated occurrences can potentially cause schedule modifications.
Check your flight status and email correspondence from the airline on a regular basis.
If the revised schedule isn’t convenient for you, many airlines provide for flexible rebooking or reimbursements.
In some cases, speaking with the airline directly might lead to better options if the changes are substantial.
