What are your flying tips?

I recently returned from a lengthy trip that included, as usual, an extremely painful flight. The seat was more uncomfortable than ever and the class was called economy comfort class, but it might as well have been just economy.

One of the best things I could have asked for was more legroom. Make an effort to choose your seat as soon as you can. Additionally, I always select an aisle seat because it’s much simpler to get up and extend your legs when you do.

Which flying advice would you recommend?

I have a steadfast rule: avoid partying and drinking before a flight at all costs. Once, I endured a grueling 14-hour flight with a hangover, an experience I’m keen to never repeat. I firmly believe it’s better to pass away than fly in such a state again. Flying hungover is simply out of the question.

Flying tips: Pack essentials in carry-on, arrive early, stay hydrated, move legs regularly, wear comfortable clothes, bring snacks, and use noise-canceling headphones for comfort during long flights.

For me, quality entertainment is paramount. I don’t care how long the trip takes to land if I have a show, book, or podcast to listen to. Plan activities that you know you’ll enjoy, is my advice. Have a book by an author you know you adore, or skip a month of your favorite podcast and have the backlog. Watch one season of a show before you go and bring Season 2 on your tablet.

Based on your experience, selecting your seat in advance and opting for an aisle seat are excellent strategies for enhancing comfort during air travel! Here are additional recommendations to further improve your future flights:

Before the flight:

Consider upgrading to Premium Economy: Though it may cost more, Premium Economy often provides extra legroom and wider seats compared to standard Economy.
Use SeatGuru: Visit SeatGuru (Find Seat Maps) to compare airplane seating layouts and select seats with more legroom, better views, or increased recline.
Research legroom-friendly airlines: Some airlines are noted for offering generous legroom in Economy. Check airline reviews for this information before booking.
Upgrade to Business Class if feasible: Consider upgrading for significantly more legroom and a more comfortable flying experience.
During the flight:

Use compression socks: These can enhance circulation and reduce leg swelling on long flights.
Take regular walks: Move up and down the aisle periodically to stretch your legs and maintain circulation.
Do in-seat exercises: Perform ankle circles, foot flexes, and calf raises to boost blood flow while seated.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration, which can exacerbate discomfort.
Bring entertainment: Load up your device with movies, books, or games to keep yourself occupied and distracted.
Additional Tips:

Invest in a memory foam seat cushion: A quality seat cushion can provide extra padding and improve your seating posture.
Consider a neck pillow: A supportive neck pillow can reduce strain on your head and neck during extended flights.
Opt for loose clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting attire to avoid restricting blood flow and increasing discomfort.
By combining these strategies with your current tactics of early seat selection and aisle preference, you can significantly enhance the comfort of your future flights. Remember, a little planning and preparation can greatly improve your travel experience.
