Rental car scratches help!

Went to Colorado to visit some family members; it snowed pretty bad overnight, and while I was still getting ready to go out in the morning, my wife went outside and cleared off the snow with a shovel. You can guess what happened… How can I avoid being bent over by the rental company?

I’m not paying for the rental car to begin with because it was given to me for an auto accident with my personal car, and then someone rear-ended the rental too.

Two scratches on the hood, some on the trunk, and some on the roof of the car; the rental company is Enterprise.

I really don’t wanna be on the hook for a $3k paint job.

Stop at an auto parts store and buy an auto paint pen for $20.

It’s through the clear coat; I don’t know if that’s gonna help.

Rear-ended and took a shovel to it? So you basically want an out after ruining a rental car? You’re on the wrong sub.

I mean, you just admitted you damaged it, so please don’t pretend you didn’t and hope the rental company passes this cost off to some unsuspecting schmuck down the road.

They aren’t gonna fix it; let’s be real, that would cost them $150 a day in rental revenue.

@Bennett
If it’s through the clear coat, they likely will fix it. But my point was not about whether they would fix it, but about doing the right thing.

The right thing? I didn’t even want the rental to begin with; my car is in the shop. It’s not like I just rented it for vacation. If my wife did that to my literally brand new car, I wouldn’t care at all.

@Bennett
I understood the rental issue the first time you mentioned your car was in the shop upthread. Does it change anything though? For me, if I damaged something I was borrowing, I would ensure it was fixed, irrespective of whether I would take the same approach if it were my own property. YMMV. But that’s me. You do you.

My other point was that it’s likely that if you don’t fix it, Enterprise will try to get another renter on the hook. I’ve had many rental cars with prior damage and many attempts by rental companies to get me to pay for it. Luckily, I am very careful about inspecting cars and making sure ALL damage is noted and photographed. Others are not so diligent, and I see weekly posts on Reddit from hapless car renters who were stuffed fixing damage they didn’t cause.

@Bennett
They will bill you for the lost revenue too. It happens all the time.

Guess I’ll pack the lube.
