Fair enough… if you have the time and patience to play the game and book long-haul flights 9 months in advance, maybe it’s worth $2700.

Not true—just use seats.aero to find the best redemptions. I found a direct flight from Chicago to Portland for 15k points, and that flight’s cash price is $354, which means a redemption value of 2.3cpp just a few days from now. Plenty of other examples like that exist.

And as you mentioned, if you search for long-haul flights on partner airlines, you can get even better redemptions.
