The dimensions should fit if you pay for a carry-on (55x40x20 cm) on Ryanair, and your bag is in the 40L range. If you’re new to the “one bag” experience, the best advice is to avoid overstuffing your bag. Even with a 40-45L bag, filling it to only around 80% capacity will make it more comfortable to carry and easier to squeeze into tight spaces if one of the dimensions is slightly over (usually the depth).

While some people have complained about Ryanair’s baggage policies, many have successfully brought on gear haulers over the years. If you opt for a personal item only, that’s a different story, requiring a much smaller bag. Some travelers have used the Osprey Daylite 26, while I’ve personally used the Wandrd Prvke 21L, which can fit a lot inside.
