I was traveling with some people in Belize, and they mentioned using a Google mobile data plan where they paid $40 per year for 40GB, and it worked abroad. I’m not sure if they were confused, but I only found a plan for $40 per month, not per year. Does anyone know if there’s actually a yearly plan like that? Thanks!
Probably google fi. Best service for travel hands down.
It’s good for traveling, but still has to be primarily used in the US
Oh, got it. Yeah, I’m almost 50/50 between the US and overseas.
You can use it for up to 90 days abroad, after which they turn off data, but text and calls still work. Once you return to the States, it resets, and you’ll get another 90 days when you travel again.
When I went over the 90-day limit, I got an esim for data, which worked great because my two-factor authentication still worked fine. I used an esim from Ubigi, and it was affordable and easy to use when I needed it.
A plan like that would be great, but there’s likely some confusion. I’ve had Google Fi Wireless since 2018, and the cost for mobile data, whether domestic or international, is $10 per GB. So, $40 would only get you 4GB, not 40GB. Still, I find Google Fi very useful for occasional international travel, especially in places where I don’t have a local SIM card.
Oh, got it. But do you also have to pay a monthly fee on top of the $10/1GB?
Yes, I pay around $25 per month after taxes. I should mention that I transferred this line from a landline, and the phone is mostly on WiFi. I use a separate phone with a different mobile carrier for domestic data.
Got it thanks very much
Much cheaper to buy a country specific esim. No text or calls but it does do data.
Yeah, that’s what I’ve been using lately. Just wondering if there was something cheaper.
You can definitely save money by getting a local SIM card and data plan when you arrive in the country. It’s cheaper, but also less convenient and might be a bit more stressful.
Yeah, I’ve done that a few times when I’m staying in a country for a longer period. Otherwise, I just go with an eSIM.
I used Google Fi to keep my US number while living outside the USA. It let people in the US call and text me using my US number, and I did this successfully for several years, starting before 2017. It worked perfectly without any issues.
I will take a look into that…depending on the cost. Right now I’m on Mint Mobile, about $180 per year, 5GB per month. Just Canada is free.
