Comparatively inexpensive large tourist towns (such as Chicago)?

I don’t travel often, so I might be wrong, but I miss how relatively affordable Chicago is for tourists. I could always find downtown hotels under $200 per night in summer, and even cheaper in other seasons, with museums within walking distance.

In contrast, downtown Boston has few hotels under $250 per night in summer, and prices often go higher.

What are some other big cities with nice and affordable downtown areas for tourists?

Mexico City is most likely among the least expensive places to travel, stay, and eat and drink. Nice hotels are available for $50 or less.

@Hicks Excellent location for a winter visit as well. It was 72 degrees and sunny every day when I went for MLK weekend a few years ago.

Montreal is a fantastic spot to visit in the summer.

strong textThe main tourist spots have the best infrastructure, which is actually a major advantage. After all, why visit Spain and skip the Sagrada Familia?

Personally, I visit the main attractions first and then explore local favorites that residents enjoy. For example, in the US, Colonial Williamsburg is a popular destination that locals often visit, even if it’s not as well-known internationally.

As a solo traveler, if I find a place too crowded, I can always return at a quieter time. Traveling alone makes it easier to adapt and enjoy different experiences.
