I’m planning a road trip next month and I don’t have a credit card, only a debit card. I’ve heard different things about renting a car with a debit card, and I’m not sure what the actual policy is. Has anyone here successfully rented a car with a debit card? If so, which rental companies allow it and what should I expect in terms of deposit requirements or additional conditions?
When I first found Dave, I was pretty on board with everything he preaches. I called Enterprise and asked if I could use my debit card to rent a car; they said yes. When my flight landed, I went to the rental counter and discovered that I could not rent a car with a debit card if I had an out-of-state license. Fortunately, a small part of me questioned why he would tell people to close all their credit cards, so I had a card with a $0 balance in my wallet. Otherwise, I would have been stranded.
